Born in Czechoslovakia in 1946, Dr. Pataki is the highest ranking sports scientist to defect to the United States, after rising quickly through the research ranks in his home country. He became an associate professor at Nitra junior college at the age of eighteen. In 1971, he earned a Ph.D. in Kinesiology at the Komenski University in Czechoslovakia. By 1977 he had earned his CSc in theory and methodology of sports sciences. In 1980, he became Vice President of the Research Center for Sports in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, and in the early 1980’s he was a member of the International Research team for the Track and Field World Championships. In 1985, Dr. Pataki earned the prestigious ISASc. designation for Independent Scientist of Academia of Sciences of SSR at only 39 years of age after having published 60 papers and scientific studies.
